Why is the adapter a mountable box instead of a cable?
Short answer: So you can mount it — under your desk or on the side of a yoke — and plug your headset in and out without holding the adapter or chasing wires. It's small enough to travel with a laptop, but big enough to be a sturdy mounting point. A 3M adhesive pad is included.
Form factor is always an interesting choice. Looking at the existing products on the market, we noticed everything was lots of wires. Connecting a headset that already has wires into a device through yet another wire just adds more.
We thought about how we’d want our own home simulators set up. Mounting the adapter to the underside of a desk or the side of a Honeycomb yoke was much more appealing than having it dangle in the air on zip ties, lie on the desk, or fall behind it.
We tested a few different enclosure sizes. We could have gone smaller or larger, but we felt this size was a great middle ground: small enough to take with your laptop, and large enough that when it’s mounted, it’s a sturdy place to plug in and unplug your headset without holding the adapter. (Exact dimensions are in the USB2GA specifications.)
